Britain on its knees: That food banks are needed is a national scandal. Poverty in the UK is driving a surge in food bank use and contributing to various forms of deprivation, including health issues and hygiene poverty. Government efforts to counter poverty, such as universal credit and the household support fund, are insufficient or being phased out. Rising costs of essential goods and stagnated benefits have deepened the food crisis. Despite the UK being one of the world’s wealthiest countries, about 7.2 million people suffer from food insecurity, an increase of 2.5 million since 2022.
