The new 999 emergency service communication network, the Emergency Services Network (ESN), will not be fully operational until the 2030s, significantly delayed and over budget by at least £3 billion. Initially planned to replace the Airwave system by 2020, the Home Office aims for quicker response times using a 4G network. However, senior officials admitted the transition might not complete until 2031. The National Audit Office criticised the Home Office’s management.
